David Gilmour, Dickey Betts, Neal Schon, Johnny Winter, Brian Setzer and more come together for an all-star performance of Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode” at the 1984 Guitar Greats concert. Progressive rock, Southern rock, blues, rockabilly, soul and arena rock collide as some of the era’s most distinctive guitarists return to one of the foundational songs of rock & roll. The performance captures a remarkable meeting of different generations and styles, all connected by the musical language Chuck Berry helped establish.
Recorded at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, New Jersey on November 3, 1984, Guitar Greats assembled leading guitarists from across rock, blues and roots music for a concert built around their different styles and influences. The finale brought many of those players together for “Johnny B. Goode,” turning Chuck Berry’s classic into an all-star guitar showcase and a snapshot of several branches of rock history sharing the same stage.

Released by Chuck Berry in 1958, “Johnny B. Goode” became one of the defining guitar songs of early rock & roll and an enduring example of Berry’s influence on generations of musicians. Berry was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of its inaugural class in 1986, while “Johnny B. Goode” was later recognized by the Recording Academy with induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Its cultural reach extends far beyond music history: the original recording was also selected for NASA’s Voyager Golden Record, launched aboard Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 in 1977.
