A giant squid is one of those animals that feels half real, half myth.
We know it exists, but almost nobody sees it alive.
Now scientists have detected giant squid DNA in deep underwater canyons off Western Australia’s Ningaloo coast.
They used environmental DNA, which is basically genetic traces animals leave behind in water.
The team collected deep-sea samples and detected 226 species, including rare whales, strange fish, and giant squid.
This is a big deal because it is the first giant squid record off Western Australia in more than 25 years.
It is also one of the northernmost detections of this species in the eastern Indian Ocean.
No live monster footage yet.
But its genetic fingerprint was there.
And honestly, that might be even scarier.
